Upon a hill above the confluence of the two rivers, the Danube and the Morava, stands a ruin of a castle, bricks renewed but heavy with the history that they have seen. The castle of Devín. The history of this castle stretches from prehistoric times. An important strategic place, it was significant for Kelts, Romans and the Great Moravians. In the 20th century it was a part of Austria and of the German Reich for a while, only being given to Slovakia after the end of the Second World War.

Today, it is reconstructed and offers a beautiful view of the natural border between Slovakia and Austria as well as multiple hiking tracks in the near region. History enthusiasts may find permanent exhibitions of archeological finds in the castle itself and its close vicinity as well as a memorial to the victims of the Iron curtain as under communist control, this border was heavily guarded, troops ordered to stop and shoot any possible refugees trying to flee to the west.

Needless to say, the Devín castle can offer something to everybody. Beautiful nature, rich history and the famous regional wine made out of currants. A visit is a must when it comes to this castle. So what are you waiting for?
