Through the eyes of Nathalie, a Tennessee native, Slovak-descendant who was recently awarded Citizenship By Descent.
The first day of this journey brought us from the center of Bratislava, all the way north, to the charming region of Vysoké Tatry (literally translating into ‘High Tatras’). Autumn leaves changing color delivered beautiful scenery and a stunning backdrop to begin this tour of the Slovakian countryside.
Beginning the day in central Bratislava offered a brilliant start to the trip. The sights and history of Slovakia’s capital city provided an important contrast to life in the East, as Global Slovakia’s adventures strive to highlight each region’s unique perspective of nature, spirituality, and culture.
A physical rest and spiritual blessing were welcomed midday at a historic Benedictine Monastery in Hronský Beňadik, which was originally built in 1075. The beautiful monastery provided a peaceful and comfortable resting place, as we admired medieval fresco paintings, observed holy objects, and enjoyed locally-made herbal tea. While only parts of the original complex remain, the location remains a must-see for any travelers in the area and as a coveted pilgrimage destination for locals who seek to be anointed by the cloth bearing the sacred blood of Jesus, a sacred artifact dating back to Jerusalem and the cruxification of Christ.
During Covid, a Catholic priest was granted permission by the church to bring the sacred cloth onto a plane, flying across the country from north to south and east to west, to bless the country and protect its people from the pandemic. Slovakia is a predominantly Catholic nation, with a spiritual revival taking place across all age groups.
As night fell, the group arrived to a cozy lodge, in a small village just below the majestic high Tatra mountains – where we were welcomed by the inn owner with bread salt and homemade slivovica. We were told this was the traditional Slovak welcome, with its origins stretching back to the days of the ancient Slavs.
This stunning mountain range will provide a charming and beautiful background for the days and adventures to come, as we discover the different and diverse parts of Slovakia together.
As our adventure through Slovakia continues, each day reveals new landscapes, deeper insights, and meaningful connections with the country’s rich heritage. From picturesque towns to serene mountains, Slovakia has so much to offer. We invite you to join us as we uncover more of its hidden gems and timeless traditions, discovering the heart and soul of this beautiful land one step at a time.
