What Is the Slovak Living Abroad Certificate?

The Slovak Living Abroad Certificate—commonly known as SLA—is an official recognition of a person’s Slovak heritage and connection to Slovakia.

It is designed for people who live outside Slovakia and can demonstrate both:

  • Slovak ancestry through a direct family line

  • An active connection to Slovak culture, language, heritage or tradition

The Slovak Living Abroad Certificate is not immediate citizenship, but it could open the door to living in Slovakia—and, if you meet the requirements, a faster path to Slovak citizenship and an EU passport.

What began with your ancestors’ journey could become your own return

Return to your roots, your homeland, and a vibrant new future in the heart of Europe.

PRACTICAL ADVANTAGES

Why Is SLA So Valuable?

For qualifying Slovak descendants, SLA can help create a meaningful connection to Slovakia—not only culturally, but practically.

Residence in Slovakia

Apply for residence smoothly and establish your legal home base in Central Europe.

Live & Work

Live locally, take on employment, or work remotely while enjoying the vibrant European lifestyle.

Study in Slovakia

Access prestigious European academic institutions and educational grants.

Business & Property

Open or operate a business and purchase property seamlessly across Slovakia.

Fast-Track Citizenship

After just 3 years of residency in Slovakia, an SLA holder can apply for full Slovak citizenship and secure a powerful European Union passport.

Who Can Benefit Most From SLA?

SLA can be particularly valuable for 4th-generation and more distant Slovak descendants who may fall outside the usual Citizenship by Descent pathway. Your options depend on your family history and records.

Relocate & Work Remotely

Individuals looking to move to Europe or work remotely while living in their ancestral homeland.

Distant Descendants

Great-grandchildren and beyond seeking a valid, structured legal avenue to European roots.

Future EU Citizens

Those wanting a stepping stone toward permanent residency and EU citizenship status.

Could You Qualify?

Every family story is different, but an SLA application generally requires three essential elements.

Slovak Ancestry

You must demonstrate that you have a direct ancestor of Slovak origin or nationality using birth, baptismal, marriage, census, or immigration records.

Documented Family Line

Connect yourself to your Slovak ancestor through each generation using civil birth, marriage, and death records that establish direct lineage.

Cultural Awareness

Demonstrate an active connection to the Slovak nation and values. Options include community involvement or studying through Global Slovakia’s academy for a Cultural Letter.
