About the event
Food was never just about nourishment in Slovakia. It was deeply woven into family life, the seasons, faith, memory, and the rhythms of the year.
So important was food that preparing it, serving it, and sharing it were often governed by countless customs, beliefs, and unwritten rules. Certain ingredients were thought to bring prosperity or protection. Some foods belonged to particular holidays and life events. Others had to be prepared in a certain way—or avoided altogether on particular days.
The Slovak kitchen could be practical and humble, but it could also be magical and sacred. These beliefs revealed themselves during Christmas, Easter, weddings, harvests, and other important occasions, but they also reached into everyday cooking.
